INSTALL GUIDE
Install your eSIM before you fly, not at the airport
14 August 2026 · 3 min read
Airport WiFi is crowded, slow and often hidden behind a login page. The single most useful eSIM habit costs nothing: install at home the day before, then check it works.
Most eSIM problems that start at an airport have nothing to do with the eSIM. A traveler lands, joins the free WiFi to install their profile and finds hundreds of other passengers sharing the same connection. The download stalls, the phone shows an error, and the first hour of the trip is spent troubleshooting in arrivals.
Installing before you leave avoids all of it. This guide covers when to install, the exact steps, how to check that everything is ready, and what to do on arrival.
Why install early
- A home or hotel WiFi network is faster and more reliable than airport WiFi.
- Many airport networks require a login page that interrupts the download.
- You have time to fix a problem, such as a carrier-locked phone, before you travel.
Before you install
- Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier.
- Connect to a stable WiFi network.
- Update your phone's software if an update is waiting.
- Charge your phone, or keep it plugged in.
- Open the order's install console on another screen if you can, so you can scan the QR code from it.
Installing on iPhone
Go to Settings, then Mobile Data or Cellular, then Add eSIM, then Use QR Code, and scan the code from your install console. If you cannot scan it, choose the option to enter details manually and copy the activation string from the console. When asked, give the new line a label such as "Travel" so it is easy to recognise.
Installing on Android
The menu names vary by manufacturer, but the path is usually Settings, then Network and internet or Connections, then SIMs or SIM manager, then Add eSIM, then Scan QR code. As on iPhone, the activation string can be entered by hand if scanning does not work.
Settings to check after installing
- Keep your home SIM switched on for calls and texts if you want them, but set mobile data to use the travel eSIM.
- Turn data roaming on for the travel eSIM. Travel eSIMs work by roaming on local networks, so without this setting they cannot connect.
- Consider turning data roaming off for your home SIM, so it cannot run up roaming charges.
Confirm it is ready
Your install console shows the profile's status. After installing, it should change to installed within a few minutes. The eSIM will not show signal at home, because it is meant to connect at your destination; that is normal.
Take a screenshot of the QR code and activation string before you leave. An eSIM profile installs once, so keep that screenshot until the plan has ended in case you need to show it to support.
On arrival
- Turn off airplane mode once you land.
- Give the phone a minute or two to find a local network.
- If there is no signal, check that the travel eSIM is selected for mobile data and that data roaming is on for it.
- If it still does not connect, restart the phone. This resolves most first-connection issues.
When something goes wrong
If the profile will not install at home, the cause is almost always the phone: it does not support eSIM, or it is locked to a carrier. An eSIM that has not been installed can be cancelled from its order page for a full credit to your balance, so a compatibility problem found at home costs you nothing.
If an eSIM cannot be issued at all after you pay, the order is retried automatically and, if it still fails, credited back to your balance without you asking.
Ten minutes at home the evening before you travel turns the most stressful part of using an eSIM into a non-event. You land, switch off airplane mode, and you are connected before you reach passport control.
